2022 NFL Review

The 2022 NFL season was the first season for the Washington NFL Team to be referred as the Washington Commanders. This replaced the provisional Washington Football Team name that supplanted its racist nickname R**skins in the wake of the 2020 racial justice uprising.

In week 17 of the 2022 season, the Monday Night Football game that aired on ESPN and ABC with the traditional crew of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills was cancelled and not to be made up. This was due to the Bills S Damar Hamlin suffering cardiac arrest with 5:58 left in the 1st quarter of the game that his Bills were trailing 7-3 and the Bengals had possession at the time of the stoppage. The game had massive impact on who would clinch the AFC North and the AFC #1 seed.

As a result of the cancelled game, the playoff rules were modified to allow the introduction of a neutral site for the AFC Championship game should the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs meet up. The Bengals were awarded the AFC North title automatically.

As of this season, each team will be guaranteed to possess the ball once in OT in postseason games only.

This season featured the deaths of notable figures connected to the NFL, namely RB Franco Harris and P Ray Guy.
